PowerFlex 3D - first 3D cam by Rollei

German manufacturer of cameras, photographic and optical equipment Rollei released 3D camera - PowerFlex 3D to the market.

It is the first 3D camera by Rollei, but not their first camera with two lenses. The company began manufacturing stereo photo cameras in 1921. The idea is the same, only presentation is different. The screen of the 3D camera performs one 3D image, combined of 2 pictures made by each lens and about hundred years ago a pare of stereo pictures were printed separately and then viewed through special lenses, producing stereo effect.

PowerFlex camera is equipped with two lenses and two CMOS, creating 3D images from two pictures. Rollei’s camera appeared after the first Fuji’s 3D camera - Fuji film FinePix REAL 3D W3. It’s strange that the specifications are so poor comparing with Japanese competitor. It seems that Rollei was not simply aware of the FujiFilm camera, produced one year earlier. Matrix resolution in half less – 5 megapixels and screen size is also smaller than competitor’s - 2,8 inches. The set of functions is absolutely identical: 3D and 2D modes, 3D video recording; 3D-live screen (without stereo glasses).

Minox PX3D review

Minox company also decided to join the 3D market with its 3D camera - Minox PX3D.

Minox tried to do something new, something different from existing 3D cameras and in some features, this task was completed. Distinguishing features of Minox PX3D: miniature size, unique design, 4 lenses (!), vertical position of lenses.

Everything new is forgotten old. It seems that for using 4 lenses Minox was inspired by Nimslo company, producing stereo photo cameras with 6 and 4 lenses from 1953. Minox just decided to arrange them vertically. The result is a 3D effect which is not horizontal but vertical - the details of the background appear behind the object in the foreground when the angle of the screen changes vertically.

It’s well known that the more basic pictures are used to create a stereo image, the more voluminous the picture becomes. While shooting the 360 angle stereo pictures, the number of lenses (on separate synchronized cameras) can be infinitely large - depending on budget. As a result, you may observe a variety of products in the Internet shops from all possible angles.

For some reason, the manufacturer does not mention the participation of Volkswagen in the project, although the inscription «Volkswagen design» flaunts on the camera’s body. Maybe this gadget is part of Volkswagen’s ad campaign or Minox is selling advertising space on their cameras ...

A miniature camera with the original design and 4 lenses will certainly find their customers - rather stylish gadget fans, than photographers.

FujiFilm FinePix Real 3D

FinePix REAL 3D W1 is the world’s first 3D digital camera features FinePix REAL 3D Technology. The cam uses two Fujinon lenses and two CCDs to capture 3D images. Each lens takes the shot from a different angle. The two images are then processed by the RP (Real Photo) Processor 3D – a newly developed processor that evaluates all photographic factors from focus and brightness to color tonality, and then merges the left and right images in a single 3D image. The camera also features a 3D LCD Monitor System showing 3D images directly – without stereoscopic glasses.

There's an Individual Shutter mode, which combines two shots taken at the same time, and an Interval Shooting mode which uses two shots from the left-hand lens from different viewpoints while on a moving vehicle such as a car or a train, so you can get 3D images of long-distance views.

The camera takes 2D images too, and makes good use of the dual lenses. Advanced 2D Mode lets you take two different shots simultaneously, and with Tele+Wide Shooting, it's possible to take a closeup or wider picture by changing the lens settings. Colour mode lets you take the same scene with different colour, as well as mono, settings.

Like most modern compacts, the W1 takes 2D movies, and being a 3D camera, goes one better and does them in 3D too. An 8-inch 3D picture viewer and 3D printing service are available separately.
